International Standards
Global standards are crucial to the project management profession because they ensure a basic project management framework is applied consistently worldwide. The premier PMI Standard, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), guides the formation of curricula in hundreds of educational programs around the world, and shapes expert practice in thousands of business settings every day.
For 25 years, PMI's global standards have helped establish the Institute as the premier authority in project management, helping it mature into the global organization it is today. In fact, the American National Standards Institute has officially recognized PMI as a Standards Development Organization. The standards are grouped into five broad themes: Projects, Programs, People, Organizations and the Profession. Find out more in the PMI Global Standards Library.
PMBOK® Guide
The PMBOK® Guide has millions of copies in use worldwide, thereby making it the best-selling project management book of all time. It was created and is constantly updated through a unique collaboration between researchers, project experts and practitioners.
Keeping Current
PMI Global Standards are kept up-to-date through a recursive cycle of revision and review. In early 2009, PMI is releasing new editions of four of its major standards. Watch project management professional discuss the new editions.
The new editions include updates to the following:
- PMBOK® Guide
- Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®)
- Standard for Program Management
- Standard for Portfolio Management
